South Presbyterian Church, Bergenfield
Grant Award: $90,330 (1997) Grant Recipient: South Presbyterian Church County: BergenMunicipality: Bergenfield Borough
South Presbyterian Church was founded in 1724 as an early satellite congregation of the Hackensack Church, in response to the growing settlement of northeast New Jersey. Built in 1799, South Presbyterian Church is one of the best examples of an architectural style unique to the lower Hudson Valley. Its ministers and early congregants played important roles in the Revolutionary War and the founding of Queens College (Rutgers University).
The grant funded badly needed stabilization of roof trusses and a king post. All structural repairs were contained within the roof space, and therefore, remain unnoticeable.
