Of the Tudor-Revival style, the first aid building was constructed in the early 20th century and funded by a private benefactor. After the squad moved to a new facility, the building suffered from deferred maintenance and disuse. It was slated for demolition, but the community rallied to save the structure and had the building listed in the National Register.

The first Trust grant in 2006 helped fund the preparation of a preservation plan to guide work on the historic building that included restoration of the exterior and replacement of the slate roof, and rehabilitation of the ambulance bay with its pressed metal ceiling and wall tiles. The 2008 capital grant also supported the construction of an addition to the rear of the building that includes an accessible entrance and elevator, new mechanicals and additional office and meeting space. The community center is now used daily, and the first floor visitor center offers interpretive videos and exhibits about local history.
