Stockton Street Historic District

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $42,298 (2005)
Grant Recipient: Borough of Hightstown
County: Mercer
Municipality: Hightstown

The Stockton Street Historic District’s period of significance extends from 1830 to 1915 and represents the economic growth and architectural styles of that time period. Representative styles of architecture in the district include Federal, high-style Victorian, ecclesiastic, and turn-of-the-century eclectic. This residential district represents the outwardly linear development of Hightstown that began at the crossroads of Stockton and Main Streets and expanded westerly along Stockton Street. The district contains 76 contributing buildings.

The 2005 Trust grant helped fund historical research and the preparation of engineering documents associated with the rehabilitation of public spaces throughout the historic district. Additionally, the grant helped fund the preparation of interpretive signage within the district. The completed project will ensure an appropriate and compatible infrastructure as well as promote heritage tourism in Hightstown and specifically within the Stockton Street Historic District.
