Cornelius Stoothoff Farmstead

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $50,000 (2009)
Grant Recipient: Franklin Township
County: Somerset
Municipality: Franklin

The farmstead was established in 1741 and continuously farmed, becoming a dairy farm in 1870. The property now includes the Dutch-framed farmhouse, and 20th century outbuildings including barns, well, silo, chicken houses, milk house and garden shed. The farm is historically linked to several early Dutch settler families and retains much of its historic fabric on the interior, including early woodwork, wainscoting, cabinetry and mantels. The township took stewardship of the vacant property in 2007.

The 2009 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a stabilization plan to guide the most urgent work needed to save the house and barn. The grant also funded a feasibility study to explore potential uses of the property that would allow it to be open to the public.
