The Old Stone House
Capital Preservation Grant Level II
Grant Award: $6,137 (2001); $154,943 (2002) Grant Recipient: South Orange Historical and Preservation Society County: EssexMunicipality: South Orange
The Old Stone House is the oldest structure in the Village of South Orange and one of the oldest in Essex County. Of archaeological interest for the incorporation of a possible stone structure, the building is architecturally significant as a distinguished 19th-century residence with an unusual stylistic evolution. Vacant for many years, roof deterioration and water damage have weakened the house.
The 2002 Trust grant helped fund structural stabilization and prevention of water penetration. A previous grant helped fund the preparation of construction documents for the building's stabilization.
