Welcome to the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance

The mission of the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance (Bureau) is to improve the quality of life by protecting the public and radiation workers from unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation from x-ray machines and reducing medical misdiagnosis caused by faulty x-ray equipment and operator error. We strive to accomplish our mission by registering and inspecting all x-ray equipment and administering a technologist licensure program that ensures that competent technologists are available to operate x-ray equipment and to administer nuclear medicine studies. We further strive to meet our mission by partnering with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to inspect FDA certified mammography facilities in order to ascertain compliance with Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) regulations. Listed below is a summary of each section's function within the Bureau. Pertinent information such as registration forms, license applications and professional services are located at the specific section's webpage.

The Machine Source Section within the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance administers New Jersey's registration and inspection all x-ray equipment within the state. There are more than 25,000 x-ray machines registered in New Jersey. It is the responsibility of the owner to register the x-ray equipment and ensure that it complies with all applicable radiation protection regulations pursuant to New Jersey Administrative Code (N.J.A.C. 7:28). Facilities that utilize medical diagnostic x-ray equipment are subject to quality assurance regulations codified at N.J.A.C. 7:28-22. These and all radiation protection regulations can be obtained by clicking on the "Rules & Regulations" link on the left.

The Registration and Support Section within the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance is responsible for processing all requests for registration and associated fees for all facilities with x-ray equipment in New Jersey. In addition, this Section is responsible for assessing annual registration renewal fees and scheduling all x-ray facility inspections.

The Technologist Education and Licensing Section (formally Technologist Certification Section) within the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance administers New Jersey's education and licensure program in radiologic technology. In New Jersey, all radiation therapy and x-ray procedures must be performed by New Jersey licensed physicians or individuals who are licensed by the New Jersey Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners. All nuclear medicine procedures must be performed by New Jersey licensed physicians or individuals who are licensed by the Department of Environmental Protection.

The Mammography Sectionwithin the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance is under contract with the FDA to inspect mammography facilities in New Jersey. New Jersey's MQSA inspectors are certified by the FDA. Each inspector must receive six weeks of training and must pass written and practical examinations to become certified. Additionally, each inspector must earn continuing education credits to remain certified.
