NJ Mental Health Cares is NJ’s behavioral health information and referral phone line. Behavioral healthcare specialists use their experience and understanding of the behavioral health system to connect callers to the information and services needed.
Wellness comprises of eight mutually co-dependence dimensions: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial. If any one of these dimensions is neglected over time, it will adversely affect one's health, well-being, and quality of life.
This directory is intended to provide information about mental health programs in the State of New Jersey. A wide variety of programs are offered at many locations in all twenty-one counties in the state. This directory does not attempt to provide information about all mental health services available within the State of New Jersey. The providers listed here have been limited to only those which receive some funding from the State of New Jersey through the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
A comprehensive listing of the locations and contact information for the Division’s Designated Screening Centers (DSC) and Affiliated Emergency Services (AES). The DCS/AES’s are public or private ambulatory care providers authorized to evaluate individuals for involuntary commitment in conformance with the provision of the Mental Health Screening Law (P.L. 1987 ch. 116). Screening Centers are responsible for providing emergency psychiatric assessment, evaluation crisis intervention and referral services for residents of a specified geographic area.

A Psychiatric Advance Directive (PAD) is a written legal document that expresses the wishes of an individual about their mental health care regarding what types of treatments, services and other assistance he or she might want, or not want, during a personal mental health crisis. This warmline is a peer-run service providing ongoing telephone support to mental health consumers as they work towards their recovery. All calls are answered by peers who are trained, supportive people with lived experience with mental health disorder. The Peer Recovery Warm Line number is 877-292-5588.
DRNJ is New Jersey’s designated Protection and Advocacy agency under federal law. They advance the human, civil, and legal rights of persons with disabilities and promote their self-determination, independence, productivity and integration into all facets of community life.
Intensive Family Support Services (IFSS) provide a range of supportive activities and service designed to improve the overall functioning and quality of life of families with a relative with a mental illness. These support activities may include psychoeducation groups, single family consultation, respite services, family support groups, systems advocacy and referral/service linkage. Services may be delivered in the family's home, at an agency, or at a community location convenient to the family.
NAMI New Jersey (NAMI NJ) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. Through education, support, advocacy and public awareness programs NAMI NJ fosters understanding about mental illness, confronts stigma often associated with mental disorders, advocates for public policies that benefit those affected by mental illness, and promotes research into the causes, treatment and recovery of mental health disorders.
