Behavioral Health Integration Stakeholder Information

The Department of Human Services, Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS) applied to renew the New Jersey FamilyCare Comprehensive Demonstration in 2022. This renewal was approved in 2023. One important component of NJ's 1115 Demonstration includes the integration of behavioral health services with medical services
under Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs).

There are three main goals of NJ’s Behavioral Health Integration initiative: (1) increase member access to services with a focus on member-centered care, (2) integrate behavioral and physical health under a single point of accountability – the MCO – for whole-person care, with potential to improve healthcare outcomes, and (3) improve care coordination by providing appropriate services for members in the right setting, at the right time.

NJ FamilyCare is pursuing a phased approach to integrate BH services under managed care. Phase 1 of NJ BH Integration went live on January 1st, 2025. The State is currently planning two more phases to continue carving in BH services.”
