Ombudsman Responds: Three NJ Nursing Homes Directed to Repay Medicaid for Serious Staffing Violations

Statement from Laurie Facciarossa Brewer, New Jersey Long-Term Care Ombudsman, 3 NJ Nursing Homes Directed to Repay $2.1M to Medicaid for Serious Staffing Violations

I am thankful that the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC) took this unprecedented deep dive into staffing data for three nursing homes. It is shocking that the nursing homes collectively failed to meet minimum staffing standards more than 90 percent of the time during the month that the OSC studied. As a state, we should support the OSC’s efforts to hold nursing homes accountable for how they spend the tax dollars we give them to provide quality care and a better quality of life to residents.

When a nursing home is understaffed, residents suffer. Their call bells go unanswered. They don’t get their medications on time. They don’t get assistance going to the bathroom. If they soil themselves, they are left that way for what must seem like an eternity.

This is unacceptable, and as the OSC review shows, it is business as usual at some places.
