National Highway System

The National Highway System (NHS) was established by National Highway System Designation Act of 1995 and approved by Congress, and is the network of nationally significant highways that are important to the nation’s economy, defense and mobility. With the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) of 2012, the scope and extent of the NHS was modified. The latest update consists of a network of strategic highways within the United States. The NHS includes all the Interstate highways, all principal arterial highways and a small portion of mileage on the other functional systems that are most critical to national defense, mobility and commerce that connects with other modes of transportation (major airports, ports, rail or truck terminals, rail stations and pipeline terminals). The National Highway System is the largest highway system in the world.
