June is National Safety Month: Protecting New Jerseyans by providing cannabis safe-use guidance and education

June is National Safety Month and for us at the NJ-CRC, safe and responsible cannabis use is one of the cornerstones of our mission. As New Jersey’s regulated cannabis market grows, so does our commitment to keeping residents informed, empowered, and safe. Whether you’re a first-time consumer, a long-time user navigating the new legal landscape, a parent looking for tips to talk to your teens, or a curious non-user, we believe everyone should have easy access to transparent, factual, and practical information.

Our statewide safe-use campaign —'Cannabis Smart. Cannabis Safe.'— featured bold, memorable messages across social media, streaming services, radio, billboards, salons, barbershops, and community spaces. Messages were rolled out in English and Spanish, generating more than 82 million impressions across digital and out-of-home (OOH) platforms—including 56.5 million digital impressions and 26.1 million OOH impressions. The campaign also drove strong engagement, with more than 261,000 link clicks and landing page views (LPV) and delivered nearly 12.7 million completed views of video and audio content.

Our social media accounts and newsletters regularly feature information and reminders about not driving while impaired, safe storage at home, buying legal, and about how cannabis can affect health. Additionally, our Safe & Responsible Consumption webpage outlines messages for adolescents and teenagers, parents/guardians of small children, inexperienced adult users, adults with compromised health conditions, pregnant and nursing people, drivers, and cannabis tourists. Messaging includes:

We support our online messaging with real-world outreach, education, and public engagement across the state.

Over the last year, NJ-CRC staff have attended a range of community events – from community baby showers to wellness fairs - to distribute safe-use collateral and to answer questions.

Our safe-use brochures, posters, and child-resistant storage bags have also been distributed more broadly through healthcare providers, cannabis businesses, municipal health departments, and other organizations who have requested them to share with their clients. All our safe-use material is available for everyone to download from our Toolkits Page. We have distributed approximately 3,000 safe storage bags, and just under 8,000 pieces of printed collateral (2,230 in Spanish and 5,717 in English). If you are a licensed cannabis business, government agency, healthcare provider, or non-profit in the state of New Jersey, you may use this form to request safe-use materials. Whether you’re outfitting a waiting room, a community event table, or a cannabis dispensary, we’re here to help you get the resources you need.

Safe cannabis use is a public health priority. NJ-CRC will continue to collaborate with municipalities, educators, healthcare providers, businesses, and industry stakeholders to ensure that New Jersey residents have access to the information they need to stay informed and safe.

How Terpenes Affect Your Cannabis Experience

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in plants, including cannabis. They give plants their characteristic scents, help protect them from mold, fungus and other pathogens, and play a crucial role in modulating cannabis' psychoactive effects. For example, two strains with identical THC percentages can feel completely different, one may leave you sedated and the other may leave you energized. More than a hundred terpenes exist in cannabis, each with its unique aroma and potential therapeutic benefits. Terpenes are essential for shaping the plant’s impact on the human body and mind.

In 2025, the Commission continued expanding access to regulated cannabis for patients and consumers across the state, with more than 396 licensed businesses operating in 211 municipalities. New Jersey’s cannabis market continued to mature, generating nearly $860 million in sales during the first three quarters of the year. During the same period, approximately $49.5 million in tax revenue and just over $8 million in SEEF funds were collected. Equity remained central to the Commission’s work in 2025. From licensing and education to data transparency and community engagement, the NJ-CRC took deliberate steps to ensure that the benefits of legalization continue to reach diverse entrepreneurs and communities most impacted by cannabis prohibition, while holding licensees accountable to the standards set forth under the CREAMM Act.
