Asbestos Hazard Abatement
This program enforces the UCC's Asbestos Hazard Abatement Subcode in all educational facilities and public buildings undergoing asbestos abatement projects.
It trains and authorizes asbestos safety control monitoring firms and asbestos safety technicians and conducts monitoring inspections.
Any company offering to abate asbestos in New Jersey must be licensed through the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
To obtain a list of contractors licensed to abate asbestos please contact the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development at (609) 633-2159.
Any educational facility or public building that undergoes an asbestos abatement must be monitored by an authorized Asbestos Safety Control Monitoring (ASCM) firm and obtain a permit from the administrative authority having jurisdiction on that project.
The list of current Asbestos Safety Control Monitors (ASCMs) is updated periodically. Prior to engaging any ASCM firm contact Asbestos Hazard Abatement at (609) 633-6224 or by fax at (609) 943-5159 to verify the firm's certification status.
Asbestos Safety Technicians (ASTs) are those individuals certified by the NJDCA and hired by ASCMs. ASTs continuously monitor and inspect asbestos abatement work pursuant to the Asbestos Hazard Abatement Subcode (N.J.A.C. 5:23-8).
