Code Red
In New Jersey, a Code Red is an emergency response protocol when extreme heat or poor air quality becomes dangerous. It opens cooling centers and helps make sure people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable residents have a safe place to go and access to support.
All New Jersey counties work with local emergency teams and social service agencies to help keep people safe during extreme heat by providing cooling locations, water, and transportation when needed.

The Code Red Pilot Program is a State initiative that helps protect at-risk and unhoused residents during extreme heat and unhealthy air quality events. Grant funding supports services in participating counties to help residents stay safe.
