Transformation Grants Will Assist with Physical Improvement Projects and the Development and Implementation of District Goals

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) today announced a new Main Street New Jersey (MSNJ) FY24 Transformation Grant opportunity. Grants are available to designated MSNJ district organizations across New Jersey and aim to improve the appearance, quality of life, and local commerce within MSNJ districts. Designated districts can begin submitting applications starting February 15, 2024. The application period closes on April 15, 2024.

“To date, the MSNJ program has distributed more than $4.3 million in grants to MSNJ district organizations,” said DCA Acting Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez. “This demonstrates our commitment to empowering communities so they can promote economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for residents. Transformation Grants are community investments that will play a pivotal role in contributing to a more vibrant and resilient local economy.”

The projects eligible for Transformation Grant funding are as follows:

  • Storefront and Facade Improvement Projects;
  • Streetscaping Projects;
  • Courtyard and Alleyway Improvement Projects;
  • Public Art Projects;
  • Placemaking Projects;
  • Operational Assistance; and
  • Marketing Assistance.

All local program activities assisted through this grant shall be in accordance with the transformation strategies defined by MSNJ and the National Main Street Center®.

It is anticipated that grant funds may be awarded for amounts up to $150,000; however, limited additional funding may be available. Funding applications will be reviewed upon receipt and eligible projects will be awarded the amount requested as long as funding remains available. Successful applicants will be required to expend the entire grant award amount within 12 months from award. MSNJ will provide 50 percent of the award upfront, and the remainder will be reimbursed after completion of the project or use of funds.

The MSNJ Program helps municipalities improve the economy, appearance, and image of their central business districts through the organization of local citizens and resources. Municipalities must apply and be selected to join the MSNJ Program, which was established in 1989. These designated communities receive technical support and training to assist in restoring their main streets as centers of economic and social activity.
