James John Puhalski was born on September 8, 1958, in Trenton, New Jersey. He attended St. Anthony’s Grammar School and High School, where he earned the distinction of “Athlete of the Year” and was a proud member of the 1975 State Championship baseball team. He continued his education at Trenton State College, where he excelled as a tight end (#80) and was a leading pass receiver for the 1980 Conference Championship football team.

Staff Sergeant Puhalski enlisted in the New Jersey State Police on June 13, 1985, as a member of the 102nd State Police Class. Over the course of his dedicated career, he served in Troop "A" at the Bridgeton, Absecon, Port Norris, Atlantic City Expressway, Tuckerton, and Woodbine Stations, as well as in Troop "E" at the Bass River Station. He served with distinction as both a patrol supervisor and squad leader, earning the respect of his peers and subordinates alike.

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Staff Sergeant Puhalski was deployed to Ground Zero in New York City. His courageous service during that time, and his subsequent exposure to dust and debris, led to a cancer diagnosis. On June 5, 2022, after a valiant battle with his illness, Staff Sergeant Puhalski passed away.

Staff Sergeant Puhalski honorably served the New Jersey State Police for 26 years.

He is survived by his twin children, his sisters and brothers, and his girlfriend.
