State Police Seek Public’s Assistance with Identifying Suspect Who Fired Gunshots in Neighborhood

$1,000 Reward Offered for Information Leading to an Arrest

Hampton Township, N.J. - The New Jersey State Police is seeking the public’s assistance with identifying a suspect who fired multiple gunshots in Hampton Township, Sussex County.

On Monday, June 1, at approximately 1:20 a.m., troopers responded to Halsey Road and Garrett Drive for the report of gunshots fired in the area.  When troopers arrived, they observed a street sign that was spray painted with the letters “BLM” and a white male walking north on Halsey Road.  As troopers attempted to speak with the man, he ran into an open field where he dropped his cell phone.

Through various investigative means, troopers were able to identify Jacob Drelich, 26, of Newton, N.J. as the suspect who fled the scene.  On Tuesday, June 2, Mr. Drelich reported to Sussex Station where he admitted his involvement in defacing the street sign the previous night.  After an interview with State Police detectives, it was determined that Mr. Drelich was not considered a suspect in the shooting investigation.

Jacob Drelich was charged with criminal mischief, eluding, and defiant trespass for violating Executive Order 107.  He was provided a court date and released on his own recognizance.

Anyone with information related to the shooting investigation is asked to contact the New Jersey State Police Sussex Station at 973-383-1514, Sussex County Crime Stoppers at 973-300-CRIME, or submit a tip online at www.sussexcountysheriff.com.  Anonymous tips are welcome.
