Improving
Roadway
Function

The Situation There are a few roadways within the Route 1 Study Area that, because of "constriction points" (narrow underpasses) do not provide for continuity of traffic flow, thereby contributing to congestion, queuing, delays and possibly accidents. Others do not have sufficient carrying capacity (or logical termini) to effectively accommodate current and predicted future travel demand.
The Proposal Provide limited widenings and extensions to selected area roadways.
The Locations The following locations have been identified for improvement:

-- the widening of the Parsonage Road rail underpass (Woodbridge)

-- the widening of two Evergreen Road rail underpasses (Woodbridge)

-- the widening of Green Street, from Middlesex-Essex Turnpike to Route 1

(Woodbridge)

-- the widening of Randolph Avenue between Blair and Hart Streets

(Woodbridge)

-- the extension of Randolph Avenue to Route 1&9 (Woodbridge)

-- selected widening and operational improvements along Route 18 (New

Brunswick)

-- operational improvements at the George Street rail underpass (New

Brunswick) H

The Actions Where needed, conduct traffic counting and geometrical programs; evaluate and recommend improvements for a predetermined design year; develop transportation problem statements/concept plans/final design; work with the appropriate agencies and organizations to seek funding for construction.
Estimated Annual Cost ($Millions) $5-$6
Overall Traffic Benefits Medium to High (Benefits to Route 1 itself - Low)
Other Impacts and Considerations This effort needs to be closely coordinated and worked through the County, affected municipalities, businesses and the community at large.
Lead (Sponsor) Middlesex County
Support NJTPA, NJDOT, Municipalities
Possible Funding County, TTF, CMAQ
Estimated Time Frame Long Term
