What is an American Sign Language (ASL) Deaf Language Associate (DLA)?

An American Sign Language (ASL) Deaf Language Associate (DLA) is a deaf adult with fluency in ASL and knowledge of deaf culture, supporting families by providing specialized early language acquisition and development services to deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children, ages 0-5. ASL DLAs act as language and cultural models and assist in making activities and curriculum accessible for children’s language development.

Where do ASL DLAs work?

ASL DLAs work through Child Care Resource & Referral Centers (CCR&R) providing language services to deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children in early childhood programs, such as childcare centers, preschool programs, in the home, or other settings as applicable.

ASL DLA Minimum Requirements

  • Deaf adult with fluency in American Sign Language and knowledge of Deaf culture.
  • Achieve a minimum rating of Advanced Plus on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) OR achieve a minimum score on the ASLPI (ASL Proficiency Interview) of 4 OR have American Sign Language Teaching Association (ASLTA) Certification.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with young children, ages 0-5.
  • Knowledge of and participation in Deaf community events.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must be flexible to provide services throughout the day in early childcare settings or in-home, up to 25 hours.
  • Must pass a background check

Submit a resume and cover letter, and ASLPI or SLPI rating score if available, to DDHH.communications2@dhs.nj.gov. If an ASLPI or SLPI rating score is not available, applicants are still encouraged to apply. Once you are hired to become an ASL DLA, training will be provided through the College of New Jersey’s (TCNJ) Campaign for Language and Literacy Excellence (CLLE).
