NJ Department of Labor Announces New Job Protection Checker to Guide Workers on Family and Medical Leave Laws

March 13, 2025
TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) has announced the launch of a new Job Protection Checker, an interactive digital tool designed to help workers navigate New Jersey’s job protection laws related to family and medical leave. This new tool is part of an ongoing effort to improve access to cash benefits from the state’s Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) and Family Leave Insurance (FLI) programs.
Created in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General’s Division on Civil Rights (DCR) and the New Jersey Office of Innovation, the Job Protection Checker allows workers to identify which job protection laws apply to them by answering a few simple questions, ensuring they understand their rights while also helping employers comply with state and federal laws. The site features a human-centered design approach and will continue to evolve based on user feedback to better meet their needs.
“The launch of the ‘Job Protection Checker’ is a leap forward in simplifying access to information on worker’s rights and protections for both employees and employers,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “We want to empower New Jersey workers to confidently take the time they need for their personal or family’s health. This innovative tool will ensure workers have the protections they deserve when they need them the most.”
“I’m proud that New Jersey provides robust job protections for workers who take health-related time off, whether it is to care for themselves or a family member, and we want to make sure everyone understands their rights under the law,” said Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin. “As part of our mission to enforce and promote laws that protect workers, the Division on Civil Rights joined the Department of Labor and the Office of Innovation in developing the Job Protection Checker to help workers more easily navigate their rights, while offering their employers a roadmap to remaining compliant with our laws.”
“Workers have important rights in New Jersey to protect their jobs while they take time to care for loved ones or welcome a child into their families,” said Dave Cole, Chief Innovation Officer. “By asking simple questions and offering information in clear, plain language, this new website helps New Jerseyans understand their protections. When we work together across government, we deliver better services and build trust with residents. We thank the Division on Civil Rights and the Department of Labor for their partnership in launching this resource.”
While NJDOL administers TDI and FLI, which provide crucial cash benefits, these benefits do not inherently include job protection. However, employees may be covered under the New Jersey Family Leave Act (NJFLA) and/or the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Determining eligibility for these protections, which differ from the cash benefits programs, can be confusing for both employees and employers.
New Jersey is committed to supporting workers who need time off work for personal health reasons or to care for loved ones. The creation of the Job Protection Checker builds on NJDOL and DCR’s longstanding partnership throughout the Murphy Administration, focusing on educating both employees and employers on how family and medical leave laws work in tandem. Previous collaborative efforts include the New Parent Guide, which explains how TDI and FLI can combine with job protection laws to provide extended paid, job-protected leave for new parents.
The new Job Protection Checker also complements other innovative solutions, such as the Maternity Timeline Tool, which helps expectant persons plan their leave by estimating when they may receive cash benefits based on their due date.
