The Ballistics Unit is accredited under ISO/IEC 17025 standards by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA)

To be accredited, a unit must follow and stay compliant to the over 500 ISO/IEC 17025 International Standards, in addition to A2LA supplemental requirements. The Ballistics Unit must adhere to and maintain compliance to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Minimum Required Operating Standards (MROS) for National Integrated Information Network (NIBIN) sites in addition to The Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE)

The Ballistics Unit utilizes the NJSP Gun Crime Protocol. This unit examines firearms to determine operability status of submitted weapons as well as comparing projectiles, cartridge cases, and other fired components recovered at crime scenes to determine if they were fired from the same firearm. The Ballistics Unit also performs serial number restoration, gunshot residue, muzzle to target distance determination, and utilizes NIBIN to aid in connecting shootings from different crime scenes. The Ballistics Unit also provides expert testimony in municipal, county, state, and federal courts as well as providing ballistic information support, training, and lectures to state police schools, outside police agencies, and other special groups.
