The mission of the units that comprise the Major Crime Bureau is to provide investigative, technical and specialized expert assistance within the Division of State Police, as well as our partners in federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

The Crime Scene Investigation unit is available at all times to provide crime scene investigation services within the State of New Jersey. Services are offered to requesting agencies in three categories in accordance with their needs:

Full Service - The complete handling and processing of primary and secondary crime scenes are provided. Crime Scene services include: crime scene documentation with still photography, videography and diagraming; friction ridge skin impression development, analysis, comparison and evaluation, recognition, documentation, collection, packaging, handling, preservation, transfer and submission of evidence according to the rules of evidence. The unit members also provide expert testimony in court.

Partial Service - The State Police Crime Scene Investigator can provide whatever services are necessary to meet the needs of the requesting agency by working with the Crime Scene Investigator of that agency.
Consultant Services - The State Police Crime Scene Investigator can serve as a consultant to the Crime Scene Investigators of the requesting agencies either on the scene or by telephone. He will advise on all matters dealing with the processing of the crime scene and the subsequent submission of evidence to the laboratory.

In connection with the services listed above, the State Police Crime Scene Investigator can arrange for other sub discipline specialists within the State Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit (i.e., Bloodstain Pattern Analysts, Crime Scene and Shooting Scene Reconstruction Analysts) and laboratory scientists and ballistics detectives to respond to the scene if needed. Homicide North and Homicide South Units

Detectives assigned to this unit investigate police officer involved shootings, homicides, suspicious deaths, kidnappings, and other serious crimes which warrant the expertise of its highly trained personnel. Unit members routinely assist federal, state, county and local authorities in cooperative investigations, resulting in the solution of homicides which might ordinarily go unsolved. Unit members are also tasked with assisting and forming cooperative investigative partnerships with national and international authorities.
The Homicide Units receives numerous out of state and federal requests for assistance in homicide investigations with New Jersey connections. Unit members are experienced in conducting complex, large scale investigations and managing and coordinating the investigative efforts with other law enforcement agencies. The Homicide Units provide lectures and training in the proper care and evaluation of crime scenes, evidence handling, case management, guidance at autopsies, and assurance that all medico-legal aspects of an investigation are covered.

As a component of the State of New Jersey Attorney General's Shooting Response Team, the  Homicide Units have significant expertise in the investigation of deadly force incidents involving police officers. The Units provides resources and expertise for all investigations of shootings involving serious injury or death to or by a State Police member or a member of a County Prosecutor's Office. The Units have developed an expertise in deadly force issues through its continual training and investigative experience. The Homicide Units conducts an annual Advanced Homicide Investigation Seminar at Princeton University which draws investigators and prosecuting attorneys from throughout the United States and Canada. The New Jersey State Police Homicide Units Advanced Homicide Seminar provides training in the medico-legal aspects of a homicide investigation and the most modern scientific techniques available to the homicide investigator. The networking of investigators that has developed as a result of this seminar has had a positive impact on the efficiency of homicide investigations statewide, and the seminar has become the one of the premier homicide schools in the United States.


Violent Crime Unit

The Violent Crime Unit works with Federal, County and local agencies to investigate shooting related investigations.  The Violent Crime Unit will continue to embrace technological advances and adopt a progressive approach to combating gun violence. The mission of the Violent Crime Unit and its  partners is the reduction of gun violence by intelligence and technology / forensic led investigations.  The Violent Crime Unit will establish partnerships to share analytical information across jurisdictional lines to learn and respond to trends in gun violence across the State of New Jersey.  These partnerships and intelligence will allow for a strategic response to gun violence investigations.  The Violent Crime Unit will utilize all available investigative and enforcement resources and work in conjunction with state and county prosecutor’s to arrest, prosecute, and convict violent crime gun offenders. The determinant of success for GVIU will be  measured by the decrease in the number of shooting incidents and increases in the number of prosecutions for crimes involving gun violence.  Creating a comprehensive approach by joining the disciplines of crime gun forensics, crime gun intelligence analysis and relentless follow up investigation all within the Gun Violence Investigation Unit is essential  as it will allow for a greater success in the mission of the reduction of violent weapon offenses in the State of New Jersey.
