Domestic Violence and the Use of Technology

This training will focus on how technology can be misused by domestic violence offenders to stalk, harass, and control victims. This misuse can raise significant challenges for law enforcement. New technologies develop rapidly, and are readily employed by offenders to exploit, stalk and harass their victims.

Training participants will have an opportunity to learn about the common ways in which offenders misuse technologies, such as phones, computers, cameras, and global positioning systems (GPS) to stalk. In addition, participants will learn what necessary evidence should be obtained in stalking cases and how to assist victims in documentation and evidence preservation.

Blocks of instruction will be presented by the New Jersey State Police Cyber Crimes Unit and the Stalking Prevention, Awareness, and Resource Center (SPARC), formerly known as the Stalking Resource Center.

Overcoming the Complexities of Sexual Assault Investigations

Presented by Chief Thomas Tremblay (Retired) of the Burlington Police Department (VT), this FREE training will focus on sexual assault as one of the most complex crimes in our society. The complexities of these crimes require us, as law enforcement, to think broadly and comprehensively about sexual assault.

Chief Tremblay will examine the impact rape myths, rape culture, personal and societal biases have on the victims willingness to participate in the legal system. He will provide attendees with an understanding of how to overcome these perceptions through the comprehension of victim trauma and the utilization of effective approaches to enhance response, investigation and prosecution of sexual assault crimes.
