NJDOT awards $1 million to
Morristown for airport improvements

Haley also grants $195,000 for historic
Morristown lighting and Atno Avenue reconstruction

(Trenton) - Acting Commissioner John J. Haley, Jr. today awarded more than $1 million to Morristown Municipal Airport for de-icing facilities, runway and drainage improvements, and for fencing to prevent deer from entering the airport’s operations area.

"Morristown Airport plays a critical role in New Jersey’s general aviation industry and an integral role in the State’s economy," Haley said. "A de-icing capability and associated improvements will enable the airport to remain competitive and to enhance its ability to meet growing demand efficiently and safely."

The grant for the airport is funded by the Airport Safety Fund, which, as part of the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund, provides funding for New Jersey’s general aviation facilities to make safety-related improvements. Under legislation signed by Governor Whitman in 1995, the Transportation Trust Fund was reauthorized, allocating $10 million annually to the Airport Safety Fund.

In addition to the airport safety grant, Acting Commissioner Haley also presented Morristown with a $85,000, Local Aid for Centers grant for historic lighting, and a $110,000 FY97 Local Aid grant for the reconstruction of Atno Ave.

The Local Aid for Centers Program makes funding available for non-traditional transportation improvements to municipalities that formally participate in the implementation of the State Development and Redevelopment Plan. The Local Aid program provides $130 million annually from the Transportation Trust Fund for local transportation improvements.
