Bid packages released on
A.C./Brigantine connector project

Transportation Commissioner John J. Haley Jr. announced today that bid packages were released to three teams of firms that have been prequalified and are eligible to submit bids on the $330 million Atlantic City/Brigantine Connector project.

"Prequalifying these firms is the next step in making the tremendous job growth and economic development in Atlantic City region a reality," Haley said, noting that the roadway/tunnel project will create 9,000 construction jobs, promote economic development to permit the creation of 86,000 construction jobs from the private construction of three casinos, generate 16,500 permanent jobs and result in $275 million a year in new state and local tax revenues.

Commissioner Haley has included in the Department’s Fiscal Year 1998 Capital Program necessary state funding for the connector project, as well as critically-important city circulation projects.

The three teams of firms that received the bid packages and have been prequalified are:

Perini Corporation/Slattery Associates in association with E.E. Cruz & Co., and Howard Needles Tammen and Bergendoff

Schiavone Construction Co./Buckley & Company, Inc./Parsons Transportation Group in association with Gannett Fleming, Converse Consultants East, and Parsons Engineering Science.

Yonkers Contracting Company/Granite Construction Company in association with URS Grenier Consultants, Golder Associates, and Schlessinger Associates.

Bids are due back by May 23, 1997.

James A. Crawford, Executive Director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), said the progress in the development of the Atlantic City/Brigantine Connector project will "significantly improve access to the area and enable the city, the entire region and this agency to reach their potential,"

The SJTA owns and operates the Atlantic City Expressway and the Atlantic City International Airport, both of which are expected to benefit greatly from increased travel prompted by development of new resort properties in Atlantic City. The SJTA is planning to invest $60 million in the project.
