Public Hearing process for
federal truck regulations to begin

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is proposing to administratively readopt existing Department regulations under the New Jersey Administrative Code (N.J.A.C. 16:32) entitled "Trucks." The readoption proposal will be published today in the New Jersey Register, to be followed by a 60 day public comment period. The Department will be hosting three informational workshops on the proposed readoption to afford interested parties the opportunity to ask questions about the proposed rule readoption prior to a Department Public Hearing on the proposal.

These regulations are required by the 1982 Federal "Surface Transportation Assistance Act" and pertain to routing and access policies for various specific truck types. All states are required under Federal law to adopt a system of routes and access policies so that trucks with widths in excess of 96 inches, but not more than 102 inches, trucks with trailers in excess of 48 feet, and double trailer trucks, are provided a comprehensive network of through routes for pickups and deliveries, and access to food, fuel, terminals, and services. N.J.A.C. 16:32 truck regulations were initially established in 1985 and were readopted in the years 1987, 1990, and 1995. The existing regulations will administratively expire in January of 2000.

The Department’s informal informational workshops on the proposed rule readoption will be held at the following times and locations:

  • Monday, June 7, 1999, in the Caucus Room, Vineland City Hall, East and Wood Streets, Vineland New Jersey, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Monday, June 14, 1999, in the Conference Room, Parsippany-Troy Hills Municipal Building, 1001 Parsippany Boulevard, Parsippany, New Jersey, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Monday, June 21, 1999, in the Multipurpose Room, NJDOT Main Office Building, 1035 Parkway Avenue, Trenton, New Jersey, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M
The Department’s Public Hearing on the proposed rule readoption will be held on Monday, June 28, 1999, in the Multipurpose Room, NJDOT Main Office Building, 1035 Parkway Avenue, Trenton, New Jersey, from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.
