New Jersey Proclaims October as Ridesharing Month

In an effort to encourage motorists to consider more efficient modes of travel, Governor Christie Whitman has proclaimed October as "Ridesharing Month" in New Jersey.

"Ridesharing saves commuters time, money and frustration," said Governor Whitman. "It helps the environment at the same time too. We ask that people give ridesharing a try, even if it’s only one day a week, it can make a difference for all of New Jersey."

"In order to make it even easier for commuters to find a rideshare partner, the Department posts ridesharing applications on its website - www.njcommuter.com. People who live or work in New Jersey can be matched with a rideshare partner with the click of a mouse," said Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein, who encouraged New Jersey commuters to visit the website and see if they have a potential match.

NJDOT, through the state’s nine Transportation Management Associations (TMA), continues to encourage alternative forms of commuting such as ridesharing, mass transit, and vanpooling to the business community and general public.

In addition, some of the state’s TMAs, non-profit organizations of employers and government working in concert to solve local transportation issues, are sponsoring special ridesharing events this fall.

More information on ridesharing and other forms of alternative commuting can be obtained through the NJDOT by calling 1-800-245-POOL or by going on-line to www.njcommuter.com.
