NJDOT suspends construction for Thanksgiving Holiday

Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein today announced that NJDOT will suspend construction activities that impact traffic for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

"We’re going to do everything we can to help motorists get to their destinations safely and with minimal disruption," the Commissioner said. "Beginning at noon this Wednesday, November 24, all construction work that affects travel lanes on our highways will be suspended through the morning rush hour on Monday, November 29. Lane closures will only be permitted for emergency reasons."

The DOT will also be extending the evening hours of operation for our Emergency Service Patrols (ESP) on Wednesday to 10:30 PM and Sunday to 8:30 PM.

"Motorists with disabled vehicles should pull completely off the roadway and stay with their vehicle until police or ESP personnel arrive," Commissioner Weinstein said. "Before leaving home, drivers should inspect their vehicle for basic items like gas, water and oil, and also ensure that the spare tire is properly inflated."

The NJDOT also advises motorists of the following safety tips when traveling:

-- Allow enough time to get to your destination.

-- Always wear your seatbelts.

-- Take frequent breaks or rotate drivers during extended drives.

-- Drive according to what the conditions dictate and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.

--Observe the posted speed limits.

-- Use turn signals.

-- On interstate and freeways, drive in the right lane and pass in the left lane.

Motorists can access www.njcommuter.com for travel information, and can also report potholes or other roadway problems by calling (within New Jersey) 1-800-POTHOLE.

NOTE: For motorists and shoppers in northern New Jersey, the Route 4 and 17 interchange has been completed and is fully opened for holiday shoppers.
