DiFrancesco Announces $10
Million for Local Transportation Projects

Additional Projects Funded Using
Excess, Unspent Federal Highway Dollars

Acting Governor Donald T. DiFrancesco announced today that the State is allocating $10 million in unspent federal transportation funds to New Jersey counties for local roadway and congestion relief projects. These funds, which are the result of recent state projects completed underbudget, will help provide tax relief to county governments.

"Traffic congestion is one of the top frustrations of New Jerseyans and I am committed to doing what I can to make their commutes easier," said Acting Governor DiFrancesco.

"I strongly support providing additional funding for state and local roads. Our roadway and bridge infrastructure across the state, whether at the municipal, county or state level, is aging and in need of repair. As a practical matter, if the state has highway money it is not using then it should be giving it to other levels of government that need it."

The New Jersey Department of Transportation will distribute the funds to each county based on a formula considering each county's population and roadway mileage. It is similar to the formula used to allocate State Transportation Trust Fund local aid awards.
