NJDOT, FHWA And AAA Urge
Motorists To: “Put The Brakes On Fatalities”


New Safety Awareness Campaign To Be Announced


What: State transportation officials unveil new safety awareness campaign in observance of “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day.”

Why: “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day” has been established to focus national attention on reducing traffic fatalities on our highways. About 42,000 fatalities occur each year due to traffic accidents in the United States. Last year, 723 fatalities occurred on New Jersey’s roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 23 percent of all crashes are caused by driver inattention.

The goal of “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day” is to encourage everyone – drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians – to take extra caution this October 10 to prevent crashes from occurring.

Who: Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein, Dennis Merida, Division Administrator, Federal Highway Administration, and Pam Fischer of the American Automobile Association of New Jersey

When: Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at 11 a.m.

Where: NJ TRANSIT headquarters, One Penn Plaza, Newark, NJ. Event t to be held outside headquarters at Raymond Plaza East
