Additional 125 Miles Of NJ
Highway Will Hike To 65 MPH On Saturday

The 475-mile network of New Jersey interstates, state highways and toll roads at which speed limits are set at 65 miles per hour will increase on Saturday, December 15, when an extra 125 miles is officially added.

The additional 125 miles of roads were recommended in August when the New Jersey Department of Transportation released its final findings and data as part of a three-year study of the 65 mile-per-hour speed limit.

New roads added to the 65 mph network include a nine-mile stretch of Route 24 in Morris County, a seven mile stretch of I-280 in Morris and Essex counties, and an eight-mile stretch of I-95 in Mercer County.

Extra segments have been added to Routes 18 and 55, Interstates 78, 80, 195, 287, 295 and the Garden State Parkway in Cape May County. A detailed list of the newly added roadway segments is attached.

The 65 mph speed limit on these stretches will become officially enforceable at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

On May 19, 1998 speed limits were raised on portions of New Jersey highways, including parts of Routes 18 and 55; Interstates 78, 80, 195, 287, 295; and the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway.

To encourage safe driving and compliance with the law penalties for speeding and other violations in the original and new 65 mph zones are doubled.
