NJDOT announces repaving of I-76 and I-295 ramps in Bellmawr Township

(Ewing) New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere announced a major repaving project on two exit ramps from I-76 and I-295 in the Borough of Bellmawr, Camden County. The two ramps are located on I-295 Southbound at Exit 26 (for I-76 Northbound), and on I-76 Southbound at Exit 1B. Work will begin on Friday, October 1.

“This repaving project will significantly improve roadway conditions at two of New Jersey’s busiest interstate highways,” said Commissioner Lettiere. “This project will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance the quality of life for motorists using these roads.”

The $200,000 project includes the complete milling and paving of each ramp. The ramps will be paved with a special anti-skid mix that provides vehicle tires with more traction and makes for an altogether smoother surface, which will help to reduce accidents. The construction schedule is as follows:

  • Friday October 1, 10:00pm – Saturday October 2, 10:00am
  • Saturday October 2, 10:00pm – Sunday October 3, 10:00am
  • Friday October 8, 10:00pm – Saturday October 9, 10:00am
  • Saturday October 9, 10:00pm – Sunday October 10, 10:00am

Single lane closures are necessary during the hours of construction work and one lane of traffic will be open to traffic. NJDOT will place Variable Message Signs (VMS) at strategic locations on both roads to inform motorists of the specific lane closures. NJDOT asks that motorists obey posted speed limits in construction zones for their safety as well as the safety of workers rehabilitating the roadway.

“Senator Bryant, Assemblywoman Cruz-Perez and I have been working closely with local officials to respond to Bellmawr residents’ requests for better road conditions. As part of our concerted efforts to improve driver safety on behalf of this community, the State Department of Transportation will immediately begin repaving key exit ramps off I-76 and I-295 using cutting edge resources designed to minimize skidding in these high risk areas,” stated Assemblyman Joe Roberts.

“This is clear evidence that the Department of Transportation through the leadership of Commissioner Lettiere has recognized that a much traveled interstate highway will only improve the quality of transportation for the residents in the southern region of New Jersey,” stated Senator Wayne R. Bryant.

The Borough of Bellmawr brought these two ramps to the attention of the Department with numerous complaints about the conditions of the pavement on each ramp causing repeated skidding and accidents.

“The repaving of I-76 and I-295 is a direct result of Bellmawr residents observing a safety hazard, and using their collective voice to improve local roadways," said Assemblywoman Nilsa Cruz-Perez. "I am thankful that the Department of Transportation has listened to their concerns and stepped in."

"We are very happy that NJDOT is investing in the safety of these ramps for our residents and the motoring public,” stated Mayor Frank Filipek of Bellmawr. “The Borough of Bellmawr's ambulance squad is comprised mostly of volunteers; our Fire Department is an all-volunteer organization, and both organizations cover not only resident’s homes & businesses, but also respond to motor vehicle incidents that occur on state highways running through and near the borough. They have responded to numerous incidents where vehicles have lost control and overturned on these ramps because of the skidding problem.”

“Responding to concerns expressed by local residents, we are moving quickly to make these improvements,” said Lettiere. “This investment will have a significant improvement in the safety and quality of life for motorists.”
