NJDOT to resurface Route 78 in Somerset County

(Trenton)– Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will resurface approximately 11 miles of Route 78 from west of Plainfield Avenue in Watchung Borough to the I-287 interchange in Bedminster Township, Somerset County.

“This project will resurface an additional eleven miles of Route 78 in Somerset County, demonstrating the State of New Jersey’s commitment to improving this vital commercial and commuting corridor,” Governor Jon S. Corzine said.

Beginning Friday, August 8, NJDOT will resurface I-78 in both directions from milepost 30.9 to milepost 42.2 in the townships of Bedminster, Bridgewater, Bernards and Warren and Watchung Borough. NJDOT will also repair eight bridge structures along this stretch of the roadway. The $8.3 million project is scheduled for completion in September 2009.

The following lane closures are scheduled:

In the four-lane section of I-78 eastbound, single- and double-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. On Saturday and Sunday, single and double-lane closures are may occur from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

In the four-lane section of I-78 eastbound, triple-lane closures may take place Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. From Friday through Sunday, triple-lane closures may occur from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

In the three-lane sections of I-78, a single lane may close from Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. From Saturday through Sunday, single-lane closures will be limited to 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

In the three-lane sections of I-78, double-lane closures may be implemented Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Fridays, double-lane closures may occur from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday double-lane closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

In the two-lane section of I-78, single-lane closures may occur from Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Friday, single-lane closures may be scheduled from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. On Saturday and Sunday, single-lane closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

NJDOT has installed variable message signs on Route 78 to inform motorists of all traffic pattern changes during construction. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org.
