NJDOT introduces personalized
real-time traffic alerts from 511

(Trenton) – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today introduced MyNJ511, a new Personalized Traveler Service that sends free, real-time traffic alerts to motorists’ cell phones, email addresses and Personal Digital Assistants.

“Personalized, real-time traffic information will help motorists to make informed decisions, save time and fuel costs, and avoid congestion,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine. "Offering New Jersey’s motorists a personalized travel information service reinforces NJDOT’s commitment to highway safety and reducing congestion.”

MyNJ511 is a free service that notifies subscribers of accidents, incidents or construction on the state highway or toll road of their choice. Alerts and updates are sent to subscribers’ cell phones, personal digital assistants or e-mail addresses. Motorists should visit www.511nj.org/alerts to sign up for this service.

MyNJ511 sends messages to any device capable of handling email or SMS messages. Subscribers create their own routes in order to maximize the efficiency of their commute. The profile is a defined set of roads used to get from one destination to another. Each MyNJ511 subscriber may maintain up to ten such profiles.

MyNJ511 complements new real-time traffic technology that Governor Corzine has introduced this year in order to reduce congestion and increase motorist safety. The new, state-of-the-art Statewide Traffic Management Center, which debuted in May, enables NJDOT, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the New Jersey State Police to improve their management of and response to accidents, adverse weather, special events and congestion. The 26,000 square foot facility operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

NJDOT in June launched the State’s new and improved 511 travel information telephone system, which will help motorists save fuel, reduce commuting times and minimize the impact of traffic incidents. The free service provides real time traffic and travel information to motorists seven days a week, 365 days a year.

NJDOT also recently launched its new real time traffic Web site, www.511nj.org, which offers interactive maps and displays traffic incidents. The Google Maps-based Web site offers motorists real time traffic conditions on State highways, interstate highways, the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. The Web site highlights incidents, construction, weather and special events.
