U-turn ramps on Route 22 reopen in Union Township

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the reopening of two U-turn ramps along Route 22 in Union Township, Union County.

On Thursday, March 11, NJDOT reopened the U-turn ramps, taking Route 22 eastbound to westbound and vice versa, located at milepost 53.3 and 53.9 on Route 22.

In September, 2009 NJDOT began construction of two new bus turnout areas in the median of Route 22 in Union Township. In order to construct the new turnouts NJDOT closed to traffic two U-turns at these locations. During construction the Route 22 eastbound left shoulder will remain closed at milepost 53.3 and the Route 22 westbound shoulder will remain closed at milepost 53.9.

The $478,000 new bus turnouts are located along the median of Route 22 and will be designated as a safe location for local buses to pick up and drop off passengers. The new turnouts will improve general traffic flow on Route 22 in each direction by allowing the buses to pull off the roadway and avoid blocking a lane of traffic during stops.
