Construction to resume on I-78 resurfacing
in Somerset and Union counties

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the resumption of construction operations on a Route 78 resurfacing project from Drift Road in Watchung Borough, Somerset County to Route 124 in Berkeley Heights, Union County. The $25 million state-funded project also includes the repair of 19 bridge decks along I-78, guide rail replacement and the installation of new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) traffic management tools including cameras and electronic signage.

Construction operations had ceased for the winter season, and will resume on Monday night, April 19 with the return of suitable spring weather conditions.

In order to complete final bridge joint repair work, as well as installation and testing of the ITS traffic management tools, NJDOT will impose temporary nighttime lane closures on I-78 westbound Mondays through Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day and weekend lane closures from Fridays at 6 p.m. to Mondays at 6 a.m., until the completion of the project.

NJDOT began construction in July, 2008 and completed all resurfacing operations on Route 78 in both directions within the project limits last fall. The project is scheduled for completion by June, 2010.

Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org or by calling 511.
