Route 440 northbound bridge

deck replacement to begin in Edison

Southbound bridge deck already completed

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that the bridge deck for Route 440 northbound over the ramp from Woodbridge Avenue will be replaced in Edison, Middlesex County.

Beginning Friday, June 4 at 10 p.m. to Monday, June 21 at 5 a.m., three lanes will be maintained on Route 440 northbound with two on the northbound side of the roadway and one lane shifted to the southbound side. Temporary crossovers have been constructed and the southbound lanes have been shifted to the right in preparation of shifting one northbound traffic lane to the southbound side of the roadway. The northbound lane will be separated from the southbound traffic by temporary concrete construction barriers.

Initially, the two lanes maintained on the northbound side of Route 440 will be shifted to the left. As the work progresses, they will be shifted to the right.

The ramp from Route 440 northbound to Woodbridge Avenue westbound will also be closed and detoured. Motorists will use the exit for Smith Street (CR 656) and Industrial Avenue and continue to Woodbridge Avenue (CR 514). Motorists heading to the Raritan Center Parkway or Raritan Center will use the Smith Street/Industrial Avenue exit to the ramp for Industrial Avenue ato Parkway Place Extension. The deck replacement work is expected to be completed by Monday, June 21.

The bridge deck replacement is part of a $4 million project to rehabilitate two bridge decks at the Route 440 and Woodbridge Avenue interchange. The Route 440 southbound ramp over Woodbridge Avenue deck replacement was completed in late 2009.

Variable message signs will notify motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org.

This project is funded under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA).
