NJDOT announces Route 22 eastbound
bridge deck replacement in Union

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the start of construction on a $1.2 million bridge deck replacement project on Route 22 eastbound over Burke Parkway in Union Township, Union County.

“The replacement of this Route 22 bridge deck is an investment in safety that exemplifies NJDOT’s annual commitment to improving to the state's aging highway bridges,” said Commissioner Jim Simpson.

On Tuesday night, July 13, NJDOT will begin temporary single lane closures on Route 22 eastbound Mondays to Thursdays from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, from 10 p.m. on Fridays to 7 a.m. the next day, from 9 p.m. on Saturdays to 8 a.m. and on Sundays and from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday mornings.

Rosemont Avenue will also be closed during certain stages of construction. During these closures motorists from Rosemont Avenue to Route 22 eastbound will be detoured to Globe Avenue to Kawameeh Drive to Burke Parkway northbound and take the ramp to Route 22 eastbound. Motorists from Route 22 eastbound to Rosemont Avenue will be detoured to Fairway Drive East to Chestnut Street to Globe Avenue.

NJDOT’s contractor, Mount Construction, will replace the existing structurally deficient bridge deck carrying Route 22 eastbound over Burke Parkway, as well as the bridge parapets. The existing guide rail in the area will also be upgraded. Completion is scheduled for November 2010.
