NJDOT to reopen Van Dyke Road bridge and close Greenwood Avenue bridge in Hopewell

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the reopening of the Van Dyke Road bridge and the subsequent closure of the Greenwood Avenue bridge in Hopewell.

NJDOT is individually replacing the Van Dyke Road and Greenwood Avenue bridge decks over the Trenton Branch of CSX railroad in Hopewell Township and Hopewell Borough, Mercer County.

On Thursday morning, October 7, NJDOT is expected to reopen the reconstructed Van Dyke Road bridge to traffic. NJDOT has completed the full replacement of the bridge deck and superstructure. The Van Dyke Road Bridge has been closed to traffic since early February 2010.

Then in the afternoon, the Greenwood Avenue bridge will be closed to traffic until late 2011 for reconstruction. The Greenwood Avenue bridge will be reconstructed in two stages in order to keep the bridge open to pedestrians at all times. The following detour routes will be used during the closure:

• Southbound motorists will take Hart Avenue to Lambertville-Louellen Road to East Broad Street to Greenwood Avenue.

• Northbound motorists will take East Broad Street to Lambertville-Louellen Road to Hart Avenue to Greenwood Avenue.

NJDOT in-house engineers designed the $3.2 million project, which in addition to replacing the bridge decks, will repave the approach roadways and install new curbs at each location. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2011.

Portable Variable Messaging Signs are being used to inform motorists of the bridge closures. Construction information and real-time traffic updates are available at www.nj511.org
