Route 1 closures planned over Heathcote Brook in South Brunswick

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation today announced upcoming overnight closures on Route 1 over Heathcote Brook in South Brunswick to construct a new sewer main underneath the highway.

The work is part of an on-going, $2.3 million state-funded project that is replacing the Heathcote Brook culvert and stabilizing the supporting soil under the foundation footings and abutments.

• On Friday night, March 25, NJDOT will close a single lane on Route 1 in each direction at 8 p.m., followed by the complete closure of Route 1 northbound from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m. Saturday morning. During the closure Route 1 northbound motorists will be detoured to Ridge Road eastbound to Stouts Lane northbound to County Route 522 westbound to Route 1 northbound. One travel lane will be maintained on Route 1 southbound overnight.

• On Saturday night, March 26, NJDOT will close a single lane on Route 1 in each direction at 8 p.m., followed by the complete closure of Route 1 southbound from 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. Sunday morning. During the closure Route 1 southbound motorists will be detoured to County Route 522 eastbound to Stouts Lane southbound to Ridge Road westbound to Route 1 southbound. One travel lane will be maintained on Route 1 northbound overnight.

• South Brunswick PD will be on hand to help with traffic management during the closures.

The existing Heathcote Brook culvert had been damaged by past storms with associated damage to pavement in the northbound lanes. An emergency temporary stabilization repair was performed by NJDOT in October 2007.

Upon completion of the culvert replacement and sewer main installation, NJDOT’s contractor, Mount Construction Inc., will resurface the roadway approaches on Route 1 in both directions.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late-fall 2011.

NJDOT will employ variable message signs to notify motorists of the upcoming bridge closure. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org
