Traffic plan announced to help handle crowds at weekend music festival in Atlantic City

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a traffic management plan to help accommodate tens of thousands of music fans expected to visit Atlantic City this weekend to attend concerts by the Dave Matthews Band and dozens of other groups during a three-day festival.

Highway lane closures and exit ramp restrictions have been planned to promote safety for pedestrians walking to and from the Bader Field concert site during the festival. The traffic plan was developed in close coordination with Atlantic City officials and the New Jersey State Police.

On Friday, June 24, on Saturday, June 25 and on Sunday, June 26 the following closures/restrictions will be in place from 11 a.m. until crowds clear late in the evening:

• All Atlantic City Expressway (ACE) eastbound traffic except for concert shuttle buses will be restricted from using ACE Exit 2, which provides access to Route 322/40 (Black Horse Pike). Motorists will be directed to continue on the ACE into Atlantic City.

• The right lane of Route 40 westbound in Atlantic City from Memorial Circle (at intersection of Route 40/Albany Avenue and Atlantic Avenue) to Bader Field will be closed to vehicular traffic to create a safety buffer for pedestrians.

• Depending on traffic and pedestrian volumes, Route 40 eastbound might be closed to vehicles for periods of time from Franklin Boulevard, with traffic directed onto ACE.

Parking at Bader Field is limited. Those traveling to Atlantic City by car will be directed to approximately 18 parking lots in Atlantic City, as well as to the interceptor lot on the ACE, just east of the Pleasantville toll plaza. Shuttle buses will transport fans between the concert site and the interceptor lot, where the parking fee will be $20.

Atlantic City officials are responsible for handling pedestrian and vehicular traffic on city streets, including designating routes for shuttles that will be available to transport concert-goers to and from hotels, parking facilities and other locations, including the NJ TRANSIT Rail Terminal. NJ TRANSIT will provide bus shuttles from its bus terminal on Atlantic Avenue.

NJDOT traffic operations officials will work with New Jersey State Police to keep traffic flowing on Routes 30 and 40, to divert traffic to ACE as needed and carry out any restrictions or closures in a coordinated manner.

Variable message signs will provide traffic information and updates to motorists on the major local highways.

NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org and telephone service 511 will feature regular updates on travel conditions around the Atlantic City area. Motorists are encouraged to use these valuable tools to get real-time travel information before heading to the concert.
