NJDOT crews continue assault on storm-related
road closures
Workers have resolved 98 percent of all obstructions
since storm hit

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson today announced that the Department’s intensive efforts to identify storm damage and track and expedite repairs has enabled the Department to winnow a list of 700 obstructions on state roads to 13 in just five days.

Among today’s developments:

• The Department announced early this morning that two travel lanes on I-287 northbound in Morris County were reopened, restoring all three northbound lanes to service. The first of three lanes was reopened Tuesday afternoon. The highway had been damaged from rising waters from the Rockaway River on Sunday.

• Repairs to damage that had closed all lanes of Route 206 near Quaker Road in Princeton Township were completed and the roadway reopened early this afternoon.

Six locations in the state, including three in Passaic County, still have storm damage or flooding requiring full roadway closures. “We won’t rest until every last location is repaired and reopened,” Simpson said.

High winds and flooding associated with the storm have prompted NJDOT to launch a program to check each of its 1,800 bridges that span a body of water. Half of the bridges have been assessed, with no structural damage reported. NJDOT has reached out to county engineers to offer technical assistance in their work to assess any damage to the approximately 2,500 bridges that counties maintain statewide.

New Jersey residents have made great use of the 511 telephone and web-based traffic information system during and after the storm to stay informed about road conditions, closures and detours.

Normal call volume to 511 is about 5,000 calls per weekday. Between Friday, August 26 and Wednesday, August 31, residents made more than 80,000 calls for information. Visits to www.511nj.org exceeded 381,000 in the same time period and resulted in 780,000 page views and 8,000 transfers to sister transportation agencies. Normally the website attracts 7,000 visits per day.
