NJDOT closes right lane on Route 37 westbound bridge over Barnegat Bay

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a long-term lane closure has been put in place on the Route 37 westbound J. Stanley Tunney Bridge over the Barnegat Bay for ongoing bridge painting work in Ocean County.

The closure of the right travel-lane on Route 37 westbound was established Monday, September 19, and will remain in place for approximately six months, through the end of March 2012. Periodic closures of the center lane will also be allowed during off-peak hours. Route 37 normally carries three lanes of traffic in each direction over the Barnegat Bay, connecting Toms River to Seaside Heights.

NJDOT’s contractor, Jupiter Painting Contracting Co, began work on the westbound bridge in fall 2010, at which time the same right-lane closure was implemented. NJDOT reopened the lane in spring 2011, to allow for the maximum number of travel lanes on Route 37 during the busy summer season.

The $9 million project, which will also repaint the Route 37 eastbound Thomas A. Mathis lift bridge and the Pelican Island bridge at the eastern end of the causeway, is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2012. Painting is an important element to maintaining the structural integrity of a bridge.

In May 2011, NJDOT completed a $3.3 million project to patch and resurface the Route 37 bridge decks in both directions from just east of Douglas Street in Toms River to Route 35 in Seaside. Interim maintenance repairs to the bridge floor beams are currently taking place underneath the Route 37 eastbound bridge, requiring periodic single lane closures on that structure.

Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
