Route 50 resurfacing to begin at two locations
in Atlantic and Cape May counties
Repairs to bridge over Cedar Swamp Creek completed

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that resurfacing operations will begin next week on Route 50 in Atlantic and Cape May counties.

On Tuesday, May 8, NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., is scheduled to start resurfacing operations on Route 50 in both directions from just south of Carl Road (milepost 8.4) in Corbin City to Buena-Tuckahoe Road/CR 557 (milepost 9.9) in Estell Manor.

The resurfacing work will be performed during overnight requiring the closure of one side of the highway at a time with detours in place for Route 50 southbound motorists. Route 50 will be maintained in the northbound direction at all times utilizing traffic shifts, and both travel lanes on Route 50 will be opened to traffic during non-work hours.

• Route 50 southbound motorists will be detoured to CR 557 to First Avenue to Cape May Avenue south to Route 49 eastbound to Route 50.

Simultaneously, the contractor will begin milling and resurfacing Route 50 from Somers Avenue (milepost 0.3), just west of the interchange with Route 9, to the vicinity of Perry Road (milepost 4.2) in Upper Township. The work in Upper Township will be accomplished in two stages, milling and resurfacing Route 50 north of Tyler Road first and then south of Tyler Road next.

• During the first stage Route 50 southbound motorists will be detoured to Hope Corson Road to Route 9 southbound to Route 50.
• During the second stage Route 50 southbound motorists will be detoured to Tuckahoe Road east to Tyler Road south to Route 50.

The project began in late-March with the contractor completing surface and joint repairs to the Route 50 bridge structure over Cedar Swamp Creek in Upper Township. The $1.9 million project is on schedule to be completed by the end of May, prior to the summer season.

Dynamic Message Signs will notify motorists of these traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.
