Christie Administration announces $70,000 grant to Anderson House in White House Station
during Season of Service
Transportation Commissioner Simpson volunteers time for yard and clean-up work

(Readington) - The Christie Administration announced a grant of nearly $70,000 during its second annual Season of Service initiative to Anderson House Inc., which provides addiction treatment to homeless and indigent New Jersey women who are battling alcoholism and drug abuse.

The grant to Anderson House was announced today by Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson. Following a meeting with Anderson House officials and clients, Commissioner Simpson volunteered his time, performing yard and clean-up work with the group.

“I am truly honored to be part of an Administration that recognizes the value of community service and the importance of supporting organizations that stand ready to assist fellow citizens in times of need,” Simpson said.

The grant is among 28 totaling $4 million that are being awarded through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to support shelters and homelessness prevention programs, resulting in improved living conditions for homeless individuals, victims of domestic violence and military veterans. The Shelter Support grants will assist an estimated 3,000 households over the next year.

Anderson House first opened its doors in 1995 and now provides a home-like setting for up to 14 women at a time, providing them with individual, group and family counseling as they fight the disease of addiction. It also offers a transitional program as clients progress toward long-term recovery. More than 700 women have been helped along a path of sobriety and self-sufficiency by the facility.

The $69,720 Anderson House grant will enable the facility to make renovations and purchase furniture, carpeting, air-conditioning units and a van.

“DCA has been so supportive of our organization, particularly in recent years, and we are very grateful,” said Anderson House Executive Director Jan Holmstrup. “This grant will enable us to advance ongoing renovations at one of our two transitional houses, where graduates from our halfway house receive affordable housing and continuing care.”

Funding for the grants comes from state appropriations and money from the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grants are administered through the DCA’s Division of Housing and Community Resources.

During the Christie Administration's inaugural Season of Service last year, Cabinet members participated in approximately 60 events across the state -- from serving meals on wheels to shut-ins and helping to serve and stock food pantries to stuffing care packages for military service members overseas and holiday letter writing to troops abroad to collecting and delivering coats to homeless shelters.

Since his inauguration in 2010, Governor Christie has emphasized the importance of community service. Today, approximately 1.5 million New Jerseyans contribute about 170 million hours of service each year, bringing a positive influence to neighborhoods and communities throughout the Garden State through local groups, houses of worship and civic organizations.
