Route 22 eastbound ramp connections
to be closed in Bridgewater
‘Sustainable Corridor’ safety upgrades and congestion relief project advances in Somerset County

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the ramp connections between Route 22 eastbound and North Bridge Street and Grove Street are scheduled to be closed to motorists for approximately three months, beginning this weekend, in Bridgewater, Somerset County.

The ramp construction, and associated closures, is part of NJDOT’s ongoing $7.9 million safety improvement and congestion relief project along a three mile stretch of Route 22 between the Route 202/206 and Interstate 287 interchanges in Somerville and Bridgewater.

NJDOT’s contractor, Green Construction, Inc., is scheduled to close the Route 22 eastbound ramp connections to/from North Bridge Street and to Grove Street tonight, August 2, using construction barrels. The ramps are anticipated be closed to motorists for approximately three months.

• Route 22 eastbound motorists destined for North Bridge Street (south) will be directed to continue on Route 22 to North Gaston Avenue utilizing the U-Turn to return to Route 22 westbound onto North Bridge Street (heading north of Route 22) then make a right onto North Grove Street over Route 22 then make a right onto Ivanhoe Avenue back to North Bridge Street heading south.
• North Bridge Street motorists destined for Route 22 eastbound will be directed to make a left onto Ivanhoe Avenue then a right on Davenport Street to the on-ramp for Route 22 eastbound.
• Route 22 eastbound motorists destined for Grove Street (south of Route 22) will be directed to continue on Route 22 to North Gaston Avenue utilizing the U-Turn to return to Route 22 westbound onto North Bridge Street (heading north of Route 22) then make a right onto North Grove Street to cross over Route 22 and head south.
• Access onto Route 22 eastbound will be maintained from Grove Street.

The purpose of the project - which remains on schedule for completion in early-summer 2014 - is to provide immediate safety improvements that address specific locations - identified through coordination with local officials - and to provide congestion relief along the Route 22 corridor. The existing highway shoulders are being reconstructed and widened to provide for new auxiliary acceleration/deceleration lanes along Route 22, creating safer and improved access at key locations. In addition, the project includes myriad design and technological upgrades intended to improve traffic flow through the corridor.

All available travel lanes will be maintained on Route 22 between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the week. The work will be accomplished with overnight lane closures and permanent shoulder closures with traffic shifts. Variable message signs will be used to notify Route 22 motorists of all traffic pattern changes.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.

A long-term improvement for this corridor is presently in the early stages of design, with Somerset County as the lead agency.
