Resurfacing contract to improve pavement condition
on Route 45
NJDOT to address multiple locations of highway
in Gloucester County

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that a resurfacing and roadway repair project to address three sections of Route 45 in Gloucester County has begun preliminary construction this week.

NJDOT will mill and repave deteriorated sections of Route 45 in both directions at the following locations:

• From south of Reid Street (milepost 25) to Carpenter Street (milepost 25.47) in Woodbury City.
• From Red bank Avenue (milepost 26.33) to the vicinity of Walnut Street (milepost 26.5) in Woodbury City.
• From just north of Interstate 295 (milepost 27.7) in West Deptford to the northern terminus of the highway at Route 130 (milepost 28.5) in Westville Borough.

The $1.5 million project - which was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers - will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. The highway will be restriped and all curb ramps and will be upgraded to meet current ADA-compliance criteria. New image-detection cameras will be installed at select intersections to replace the existing underground loop detectors.

NJDOT’s contractor, Richard E. Pierson Construction Co., has begun initial construction activity including site mobilization and sign installation this week. Route 45 carries two travel lanes through the majority of the work zone areas, but necks down to one lane in each direction for a small stretch, north of Red Bank Avenue in Woodbury. The work will be accomplished with single-lane closures, maintaining all travel lanes during peak period travel hours. Access to all businesses will be maintained. All work in the contract is expected to complete in November 2013.

Last year, NJDOT completed a Complete Streets retrofit project which reconfigured Route 45 between Carpenter Street and Red Bank Avenue – between the two areas to be repaved in Woodbury.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
