I-287 northbound lane closed for priority repairs in Edison

Motorists advised to seek alternate routes

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the right lane in the northbound direction on a heavily traveled I-287 overpass over Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor tracks in Edison, Middlesex County, will be closed for priority repairs.

Two out of three northbound travel lanes across the overpass located just past Exit 2/Route 27 are currently open, however motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes.

As a result of the priority repairs in the northbound travel lane, morning commutes toward Morristown are expected to be very difficult.

Southbound traffic is not affected by the construction.

A scheduled NJDOT inspection of the overpass today found the outer W-Beam of the overpass in the northbound direction has weakened due to exposure. To ensure the safety of motorists, NJDOT will prohibit travel on one of the three northbound lanes until repairs are completed.

Evaluation crews have been mobilized to assess the structure and determine what repairs are required. Once the scope of the work is determined, a schedule for how long the repair will take will be established. NJDOT crews will coordinate with railroad safety personnel as the work progresses.

Both Amtrak and NJ Transit trains use the tracks below the overpass and schedules may be affected.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
