White Horse Circle improvements to begin in 2016

NJDOT moves up timetable at request of Mercer County

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation officials today announced that improvements to the White Horse Circle would be made earlier than originally scheduled after discussions with Mercer County officials.

Located at the intersection of South Broad Street, White Horse Avenue, and Route 206, White Horse Circle was scheduled for improvements starting the middle of 2017. The current circle, which is difficult to navigate, will be replaced with a roundabout creating a more uniform flow of traffic. Mercer County Officials support the plan, and have asked NJDOT to make the improvements as soon as possible.

“When you drive through the White Horse Circle you feel like you’re taking your life in your hands,” Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes said. “A replacement project has been in the works for three years -- it’s time for the State DOT to put that project on the fast track to completion so traffic flow and driver safety are no longer being compromised, and I thank Commissioner Fox for his willingness to hear my concerns.”

“I have spoken to Mercer County Executive Hughes and he expressed the county’s desire to see the circle reconstructed earlier than initially planned,” NJDOT Commissioner Jamie Fox said. “Given the traffic problems White Horse Circle has seen over the years, I agree that it is necessary to make these improvements sooner rather than later. I have spoken to the team handling this project and they will be able to start construction by the fall of 2016.  We always make it a priority to work with local officials to find an expedient and beneficial outcome, especially when motorist safety is on the line.”

“The expedited schedule for the replacement of the White Horse Circle is welcome news for Hamiltonians and will make a significant improvement to the safety of all motorists,” Hamilton Mayor Kelly Yaede said.
