Railroad-crossing repairs
announced in Elmwood Park

Necessary safety work will
require road closures on Midland Avenue

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a planned railroad crossing repair project that will require a two week closure of Midland Avenue in Elmwood Park, Bergen County.

The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing with new asphalt approaches. Midland Avenue will be closed and detoured at the railroad crossing from Thursday April 30 at 7 a.m. through Thursday May 14 at 7 p.m.

The following signed detour will be in place:

Northbound traffic on Midland Avenue:
Right on Market St.
Left on Saddle River Rd.
Left on I-80W to Exit 62 (Pehle Ave.)
Right on New Pehle Ave.
Right on Midland Ave.

Southbound traffic on Midland Avenue:
Left on New Pehle Ave. to I-80E
Exit 62B (Saddle River Rd.)
Right on Saddle River Rd.
Right on Market St.
Left on Midland Ave.

The new crossing surface is part of a larger safety project that will include installation of a queue cutter traffic signal and a new “DO NOT BLOCK THE BOX” surface treatment. The queue cutter system uses new signals that are programmed to help prevent cars from stopping on the tracks. The project began at the end March and is expected to be completed by the summer at an estimated cost of $800,000, with $300,000 coming from federal funds and $500,000 paid for by the state. 

Access will be maintained to residential properties and businesses on either side of the rail line.  If the work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly. The detour will be coordinated with the local police.
