Lane shift on Route 46 Hackensack River Bridge tomorrow night

Traffic shifts for continued bridge work between Little Ferry and Ridgefield Park

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a lane shift on Route 46 over the Hackensack River Bridge between Little Ferry and Ridgefield Park, as the project to rehabilitate the bridge advances.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, October 30 until 6 a.m. Saturday, October 31, NJDOT’s contractor, Conti Enterprises, is scheduled to shift traffic onto the newly reconstructed eastbound lanes and close the westbound lanes of Route 46 over the Hackensack River Bridge for the next stage of the bridge rehabilitation. The overnight lane closures between Bergen Turnpike in Little Ferry and Main Street in Ridgefield Park are necessary to move barriers, signage and restripe the roadway.

The bridge deck is being replaced in two stages. This lane shift signals the completion of installing the new deck on the eastbound lanes. Work will now switch to replace the deck on the westbound lanes. After the bridge deck work is complete, all lanes will be reopened and structural work will begin under the bridge, which will not affect traffic.

The federally-funded $39 million project has three elements - the conversion of the Little Ferry circle into a conventional four-way intersection, which was completed in June 2014, the rehabilitation of the structurally deficient Hackensack River Bridge, and the installation of a new drainage system and pump station to reduce flooding in the area. The project has been coordinated with local officials and emergency response agencies and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2016.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
